“Railway Unions Threaten to Halt All Trains from May 1 if Old Pension Scheme Isn’t Implemented

Several unions of railway employees and workers, unified under the Joint Forum For Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (JFROPS), have issued a threat to halt all train services across the country starting May 1 if their demand to reinstate the Old Pension Scheme is not addressed.

Shiv Gopal Mishra, Convener of JFROPS and General Secretary of All India Railwaymen’s Federation, expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s stance, stating, “The government is completely non-committal to our demand for the restoration of the Defined Guaranteed Old Pension Scheme in place of the New Pension Scheme.” Mishra emphasized that direct action is now unavoidable due to the lack of alternatives.

Mishra announced that representatives of various federations under JFROPS have collectively agreed to serve a notice to the Railway Ministry on March 19, formally informing them about the proposed nationwide strike and the disruption of all train services starting May 1, 2024, coinciding with International Labour Day.

Furthermore, Mishra revealed that several unions representing other government employees, who are also part of JFROPS, will join the strike alongside railway workers.

A press release issued by JFROPS urged all constituent organizations to take appropriate action and make necessary preparations for serving the strike notice to their respective Administrations effectively.

Mishra highlighted the disparity between the Old Pension Scheme, which was deemed beneficial for workers, and the New Pension Scheme, which, according to him, neglects the welfare of employees.
