Anurag Thakur’s ‘Jungle Raj’ Dig at Mamata Over Sandeshkhali Row

Union Minister Anurag Thakur criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the Sandeshkhali case, alleging that there is a ‘jungle raj’ (lawlessness) prevailing in the state.

Thakur stated, “Everyone has witnessed the ‘Jungle Raj’ of West Bengal. The message from Sandeshkhali has reached everyone that under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, there is ‘Jungle Raj’ and how women are subjected to atrocities.”

He further added, “Women seeking justice are compelled to take to the streets. However, they face police batons, their voices are brutally suppressed, and nobody pays heed to them. When they approach the court, the government supports those who commit atrocities against women and evade the law.”

Thakur questioned Mamata Banerjee about the delay in the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan, a local Trinamool Congress leader accused of sexual assault and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

“What was Mamata Banerjee’s reason for allowing this individual to roam freely instead of being arrested? Why does she protect those accused of raping women and corruption?” Thakur added.

Thakur’s criticism coincided with Shahjahan’s arrest on the same day, after being on the run since January 5 when his supporters attacked officials of the Enforcement Directorate in Sandeshkhali. He was apprehended from a house in North 24 Parganas’ Minakhan and subsequently remanded to 10-day police custody by a local court.

Later in the day, the Trinamool Congress suspended Shahjahan from the party for a period of six years. TMC MP Derek O’Brien announced, “All India Trinamool Congress has decided to suspend Sheikh Shahjahan from the party for six years.” He also remarked on the suspension of other politicians from different parties, challenging the ruling BJP to take similar action against its members.
